The Role Of A Speech Therapist

A Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) assesses, diagnoses and treats Speech, Language and Communication disorders/delays in both children and adults. SLTS also have the clinical           experience and professional training in Dysphagia to provide assessments, diagnoses and         recommend treatment plans for clients with feeding, eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties in addition to complex learning difficulties.

A Speech and Language Therapist will also identify what part of the swallowing process is       making it difficult for a client to eat (e.g. Chewing, manipulating food with the tongue,               co-ordinating mouth and throat structures and muscles or breathing appropriately while eating) and can tailor eating plans to specific client’s needs and ensure a healthy and safe nutritional dysphagia plan is in place.
